My years of education were spent taking exams to get academic degrees, not focusing on my unique work skills. Actually, I think school was less about teaching you skills and more about testing them while providing you the necessary information. But anyway, we live in the age of Harvard dropouts and venture capital throwing money at startups. Who needs a degree if you have started your own successful business or patented your own invention? If you can prove your value with independent achievements, why go to school? Unless it’s a bootcamp that is really practical. Especially in tech, I see actual experience mattering more than credentials and the rate of change is dizzying. And you can learn so much for free on the internet just by using Google or even free classes from universities.
So when I was trying to think of an alternative career / job, all that came to my mind were different professions requiring a different set of academic credentials. I really had not thought about what my “transferable skills” were at all. I have done zero reflection on what skills I actually have and that even apply to the work that I do now!
I need to really take some time to think about the work I do now. Today’s been kind of a bust because “life” – I almost got run over by a car today and called the police but hopefully I’ll have something to write about that tomorrow.
